Getting To Golfito, Costa Rica

KatieKatie Duncan has been helping visitors to the Southern Zone of Costa Rica for over 13 years now. Cruising Mexico and Central America on a sailboat before settling in Golfito Bay, she learned that getting airline tickets, connecting with other remote places or simply coping with language differences can be a big challenge to your adventure. Her Land Sea TRAVEL AGENCY Services can book your international flights quickly. She can assist you in touring Costa Rica including domestic air transfers, local car rental, city hotels or a remote cabin or lodge reservation. She will always take the time to search for the best fares and most convenient itineraries. If the tickets are for entry to Costa Rica from out of the country, a complete package describing your arrival routine can be sent to you in advance of your flight so you'll know just what to expect and how to proceed in Costa Rica. She sells national SANSA airline tickets to get you from San Jose, Costa Rica to outlying destinations as well as representing all major international airlines.

LAND SEA SERVICES is located in a green 2 story building overlooking Golfito's bay. You can enter from the waterfront dingy dock or the street front entry 500 meters south of Central Park. Please feel free to contact Katie by fax, phone or e-mail for assistance with  your travel needs.

Most international flights arrive at San José's Juan Santamaria international airport.  There are good connections to US and Canadian cities and several Latin and South American countries.  Travel options after arriving at the international airport are domestic air transfers, rental cars, public buses or private taxis.

Golfito by Air

Sansa airline leaves from Juan Santamaria International airport and has a limited luggage allowance of carry-on and checked baggage to a maximum of 27 pounds per person. Excess baggage is allowed at an extra charge BUT is subject to space or weight capacity and there is an additional $1.00 charge per pound after 27..  A total of 2 surf boards (max. size 6’9”) are allowed per flight.  If you want to ship your board check it in early. One way ticket price $92.  Flight schedules are variable, but there is generally one early morning departure in and out of Golfito plus an additional flight around mid-day. During the high tourism season, a third afternoon flight will be offered.

Golfito by Bus
Bus travel is cheap and very good.  The Tracopa-Alfaro bus company leaves from the main Coca-Cola depot about a 20 minute walk east from the city center.  The official address is Calle 16 Avenida 1-3.  This is not the best part of town, so watch for pickpockets and use common sense.  Never leave your bags unattended.  The area is generally safe during the day, though after dark you might take a taxi rather than walking.  Some travelers suggest that you take a cab at any time.  Watch your luggage stored in overhead compartments, scamsters will "push" bags to the back of the bus and then pass them out the window to an accomplice before the bus ever leaves the terminal.  If you put luggage under the bus use care at each stop to make sure that another passenger doesn’t get your baggage by mistake.

Renting a Car
Renting a car and driving in Costa Rica allows total freedom of movement. You can cover a lot of ground without delay, and you can stop and sightsee wherever you want. Plan your route before you take it, then stop and ask if you need directions. Costa Ricans do not like to say that "I don't know" and sincerely want to be helpful. You may need to ask more that one person and get a consensus.
Remember to never leave valuables in your car. It is best to carry them with you. There are sometimes young boys in parking lots of nicer restaurants who will offer to watch your car for you while you eat. It is best to agree and then tip them a few hundred colones (approx. $1 U.S.).
When you get your rental car, the representative will have you check the car for nicks, dents, and adequate tires. Exaggerate this procedure. Also, be sure to fill the car before you return it, or be prepared to pay $20.00 for a fourth of a tank of gas.
It is best not to speed, and the speed limit signs are in kilometers. If you are pulled over by the police, they will want to see your rental papers and your passport. Be polite, but never let them keep either of these documents. Also, do not pay the police for the ticket. You pay the ticket to the rental car company when you turn in the car. Paying the police creates corruption.
There is about 29,000 kilometers of highway in Costa Rica but only about 14% of that is paved. This is why we recommend 4 X 4 vehicles to most areas. Even Manuel Antonio and Monteverde (as popular as they are) have terrible roads to get there. But, look at it this way, if the roads were great, the places would be too crowded.

Car rental notes:
Car rental companies in Costa Rica charge a mandatory minimum insurance per day of approx. $16.00. This is not included in package and is payable direct to car company on arrival. Car rental companies will require a deposit on a major credit card on arrival of anywhere between $1,000 - $1,500. It is recommended that you check car body and tires for damage and advise personnel before departing with car. Deposit will be refunded on return.

Rental cars are NOW available in Golfito. For rates and reservations Send us an E-mail

Pavones Beach is synonymous with SURF!!!  Best known among surfers as the place with the “longest left break,” Pavones  is a semi-open bay featuring great waves all year long.  It’s out of the way location – almost 2 hours from Golfito- make it a hide-a-way for the dedicated.  But surf isn’t all this little town has to offer.  It’s located in the middle of some of the most exuberant rain forest in the country and inhabited by fun, friendly people.  Many large and beautiful pieces of virgin land, fantastic old farms and smaller lots split from the original farms offer wonderful places to construct your dream home or tourist retreat.  Water front, hillsides with views or jungle reserves.  A variety of dream projects from surf bungalows to luxury homes are popping up each new season.

ZANCUDO beach offers a personality all it's own with "Laid Back" being key words to describe this charming community.  It’s fine gray sands, abundance of green foliage and gentle blue waves make it one of the countries most colorful and quaint beach playgrounds. With an estuary behind feeding into both a river and the sea, it offers residents and tourists a variety of fun including sport fishing, kayaking, river cruises, beachcombing and surfing.  Charming restaurants, bars and lodging are sprinkled down the beach road and many  ex-patriots have made their “home away from home” here amongst the like minded. The road in has enabled municipal services of electricity and water to serve the area, but most residents find it more convenient to come and go to nearby Golfito via taxi boat or their personal launch.
Golfito
A Bay With-in a Bay, you will find no finer yacht anchorage in the tropics than Golfito.  Homes of boat enthusiasts and marina development plans are catching on like wildfire on the shores of this area.  Set against an awesome backdrop of lush green jungle with natural clearings and plateaus along the shore, ideas for low impact development are limitless.  Calm waters with good anchor holding and pier sites plus the convenience of town just minutes away across the bay make this waterfront zone very desirable - Both commercially and for private homes. The jungles behind are full of birds, animals, tropical fruits, trails and an abundance of pre-Columbian history as this bay was home to one of Costa Rica's Indigenous fishing communities. Self generated power and natural water supplies must fill the needs of these properties as they are beyond the reach of town-folks public services.

Puerto Jimenez
Acting as “the gateway to Corcovado National Park”, visitors from every part of the world have gone through Puerto Jimenez and some of them have decided to stay.  This is a multi-cultural town with a true western frontier flavor – the product of a long history of hearty adventurers settling in these parts for gold mining, cattle ranching and trophy hunting in the remote jungles and coming in to town outposts infrequently to cash in a claim, pick up fresh horses and stock up on more provisions. With the prohibition of mining and hunting a new focus on the natural treasures and famous biodiversity has given the town center a new life. Hidden down the outlaying roads are world class beaches and properties from Playa Blanca to the north, Matapalo to the south and Carate on the east….. with surf, waterfalls, jungle trails, awesome animal abundance,  and most importantly, a community of people dedicated to the possibilities of tomorrow with conservation today.  This area is honestly, one of a kind for a private home, eco-tourism project or for an investment in conservation.

                        OUR "PET PROJECT"

golfito dog clinicLand Sea Services is proud of advances made in Golfito to further the humane treatment of dogs and cats. Community groups such as ZAPPA and McKee are reaching out to give low and no-cost care to 'under privileged' and street critters, greatly reducing the population of homeless animals in our area. Your contributions make possible the Low Cost and Free Clinics being sponsored by area volunteers and veterinarians. Each contribution of $10.00 sponsors a dog or cat that wouldn't otherwise be able to receive vaccinations and spaying - and wouldn't have been considered adoptable! Your  generous contribution of $200.00 will sponsor a neighborhood clinic with free services to 20 needy animals.  That's a potential reduction of over 100 unwanted births in a neighborhood in the first year alone.  Do the math?! It's a loving and needed investment. Please consider supporting our "pet project" by bringing a donation to our office when you visit Golfito. Receipts will be given along with our THANKS!  Volunteers for Clinic Days are always welcome.
